The Sweet Sound of Unix
Unix comes singing and dancing into your life everyday.
Now I’m not talking about the fact that 67% of the million busiest Websites run on a Variant of Unix, Although this is a great example of how Unix is touching and enhancing your life. No, my thoughts are directly geared at the Music Industry. Almost every modern recording that you hear on the Radio, TV and other Media Sources today will undoubtedly at some time in its production cycle have entered the world of Unix.
The Highest probability (and a good example of this) is lets say one of the Tracks currently in the Download top 100 chart. Now during the Production of the ‘said’ track it will have without doubt been either Recorded, Produced, Post-Produced, Remixed, Mastered or even Re-Mastered via some form of DAW application or environment. Be it dedicated Hardware such as *Pro Tools HD, or it’s cheaper sibling *Protools LE, both of these engage with Mac OS X which is in itself a Unix-Based Architecture.
Ok… what about Windows I hear you say? Afterall, Windows can also engage with Pro Tools. Well, that’s just about where the similarities end. You see WIndows is the kiss of death for Music Production. Talk to any ‘credible’ and more ‘experienced’ Music Production Unit and they will let you in on all of the horror stories that Windows based DAW’s can present you with. However, get them on the Subject of Mac OS X and DAW applications and they will be singing like the morning sun.
(*We use Pro Tools just as one example… there are many others!)
To make the grade in any Industry it always makes good sense to function with the most efficient, stable and productive equipment. If you want your Music to have a decent up-bringing and to stand any chance of a good career, feed it Unix wherever possible. It’s the Digital Food for Creative Champions that is for sure. Here at Submarsound we totally run on Mac OS X using the latest DAW Applications from Digidesign and Steinberg.
Unix delivers and drives us and we love it.
One of our plans for the Future is to develop a Mobile Unix DAW Solution that is affordable and easily understood by Musicians. We are waiting for the development of the Personal Tablet market before diving into this but we are excited about it already. With forward-thinking companies such as TooMuchGreen pushing the word and power of Unix into Businesses and Schools; The development of the Creative Learning Centers is something that we also see as a great place to encourage people to Get involved with Music. What better way to start your Music career than with the reliability of Unix to support you.
